How to check your thumbnail's safe zones
- 1
Drop your thumbnail
Add a 16:9 video thumbnail or a 9:16 Shorts cover. The checker switches to the right layout by itself.
- 2
Read the zones
Gold areas are where YouTube draws on top of your image. A zone turns pink when there is a lot of detail underneath — often text, a face or a logo.
- 3
Move it and check again
Shift the text or subject out of the pink zones, export again and drop the new version in. Clear zones mean nothing important gets covered.

- Video lengthThe time badge sits in the bottom-right corner on computers, phones and TVs.
- Watch progressReturning viewers see a red progress bar along the bottom edge.
- Hover buttonsOn computers, buttons appear in the top-right corner when the preview plays.
Shorts (9:16)

A simple rule that works everywhere: keep the words in the left two-thirds or the upper half of a video thumbnail, and in the middle of a Shorts cover. More in how much text a thumbnail should have.
Safe zone checker FAQ
What is a thumbnail safe zone?
The part of the thumbnail that YouTube never covers. YouTube draws a few things on top of your image — the video length in the bottom-right corner, a red progress bar along the bottom for returning viewers and, on computers, buttons in the top-right corner when the preview plays — so important text and faces belong outside those areas.
Where should I not put text on a YouTube thumbnail?
Avoid the bottom-right corner, where the video length badge sits on every device, and the very bottom edge. Keeping key words in the left two-thirds or the upper half of the frame is a simple rule that works on every surface.
Do Shorts covers have safe zones too?
Yes. In the Shorts shelf YouTube writes the title and view count over the bottom of the cover, and the menu button sits in the top-right corner, so keep your text and subject in the middle of the 9:16 frame.
How does the checker know something is covered?
It measures how much fine detail — edges and contrast — sits under each overlay compared with the rest of your image. Text, faces and logos create a lot of detail, so a busy zone is flagged. It is a guide for your eye, not text recognition, so always take a look yourself.
Are the overlay positions exact?
They follow YouTube's current layouts on computers, phones and TVs and are approximate, because YouTube adjusts its design from time to time and badges grow with longer videos. Leave a little margin around every zone.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The checker reads your image inside your browser; it is never sent to ThumbMagic or anyone else.
Thumbnails that respect the safe zones by design
ThumbMagic composes every thumbnail with the text clear of the video length badge, in 16:9 up to 4K and as a 9:16 Shorts cover. Your first one is free.
