How to Make a YouTube Thumbnail with AI (Step by Step, 2026)

6 min read

1. Start from the title and the promise

A thumbnail and a title work as a pair. Write the title first, then ask: what is the single moment or result that makes this video worth watching? That moment is your thumbnail. If the title says “I tried it for 30 days”, the thumbnail shows day 30, not day 1.

2. Write a prompt with five ingredients

Good thumbnail prompts are short scene descriptions, not keyword lists. Include:

  • Subject: who or what is in the picture (you, a product, a place)
  • Emotion or action: shocked, celebrating, mid-jump, cheese pull
  • Setting and light: dark studio, golden hour, neon night street
  • One focal object or contrast: a glowing trophy, a red arrow, a before/after split
  • Text: two to four words in quotes, such as “DAY 100”

3. Add your face (optional, often powerful)

Personality-driven channels grow on recognisable faces. Upload a clear, well-lit photo of yourself once and the AI can place you in the scene with the expression you describe. Use only photos of yourself or of people who agreed — never recreate other real people.

4. Generate variations, then pick a direction

Ask for two or four variations at once. Look for the one that reads fastest — the one you understand in under a second. Do not polish too early: choosing the right idea matters more than perfecting the wrong one.

5. Refine by typing

Instead of layers and masks, describe the change: “make the text bigger”, “warmer light”, “move me to the left”, “add a red arrow pointing at the screen”. Each edit becomes a new version, so you can always go back.

6. Test it where viewers see it

Most views happen on phones. Check your thumbnail at small size and next to other videos — our free thumbnail tester shows it in a home feed, on a phone, in search and in the tiny up-next list. If the text or subject disappears at 168 pixels wide, simplify.

7. Export in the right size

YouTube now recommends 3840×2160 for video thumbnails (JPG or PNG, up to 50 MB from a computer). Uploading from your phone? Video thumbnails are limited to 2 MB there, so use a 1280×720 JPG. ThumbMagic exports both, plus a 9:16 Shorts cover, a square podcast image and sizes for X, Instagram and LinkedIn.

8. Let your audience decide

Upload your two or three strongest variants to YouTube Studio's A/B testing. YouTube shows the option with the highest watch time share to everyone when the test ends — and you learn what your audience responds to for the next video.
