How to Write AI Prompts for YouTube Thumbnails That Get Clicks

7 min read

The prompt formula

Good thumbnail prompts are specific about a few things and silent about the rest. Use this order and you will rarely need more than two sentences:

  • Subject: who or what is the hero of the image
  • Emotion or action: shocked, laughing, holding up the product, mid-jump
  • Setting: gym, dark forest, studio, city at night
  • Lighting: dramatic rim light, warm sunset, neon glow, soft daylight
  • Colour palette: two or three colours that contrast
  • Text: three to five words in quotes, for example 'I QUIT MY JOB'
  • Style: cinematic, bold and loud, clean and minimal, cartoon

Put the text in quotes and keep it short

Modern image models render lettering well, but only when you tell them exactly what to write. Put the words in quotes and keep them short. Thumbnails are viewed at a few centimetres wide on phones, so three to five words is the practical limit.

Avoid repeating your video title. The thumbnail and title work as a pair: the title explains, the thumbnail creates the feeling or the curiosity.

Examples by niche

Use these as starting points and swap in your own topic:

  • Gaming: "Gaming thumbnail, glowing sword in a dark forest at night, neon green rim light, huge text 'DAY 100', high energy"
  • Tech: "Matte black laptop floating on a dark background, cool blue rim light, minimal, text 'WORTH IT?'"
  • Finance: "Rising green chart with gold accents, clean dark background, text '$10K IN 30 DAYS', trustworthy"
  • Fitness: "Before and after split, dramatic orange gym light, text '90 DAYS LATER', gritty and energetic"
  • Travel: "Neon street at sunset in pink and violet, sense of place, text '48 HOURS IN TOKYO', cinematic"
  • Education: "Glowing lightbulb icon on deep teal, friendly and clear, text 'LEARN THIS IN 10 MIN'"

Edit instead of starting over

When a result is close, do not rewrite the whole prompt. Give one short instruction at a time, such as 'make the text bigger', 'move the subject to the right', 'more contrast', or 'change the background to a city at night'. Small, specific edits keep everything you liked and change only what you did not.

Mistakes that make AI thumbnails look generic

Watch out for these common problems:

  • Too many subjects competing for attention
  • Long sentences of text that become unreadable at phone size
  • Vague words like 'cool' or 'awesome' instead of concrete lighting and colours
  • Conflicting styles in one prompt, such as 'minimal' and 'busy'
  • Tiny details that disappear when the thumbnail is shrunk

Use your own face

Viewers recognise creators by their face and expression. Upload a few clear, well-lit photos of yourself and refer to them in your prompt, for example 'me looking shocked, pointing at the chart'. Consistent faces and styles make your videos easier to spot in a crowded feed.
