How Much Text Should a YouTube Thumbnail Have? (Rules That Work)

5 min read

The short rule: 0–5 words

A thumbnail is seen for a fraction of a second, often at phone size. Every extra word makes the others smaller and slower to read. Two to four words is the sweet spot; many great thumbnails use none at all and let the image speak.

Don't repeat the title

The title is right next to the thumbnail. If both say the same thing, you waste half your space. Use the text to add a second hook:

  • A number: “DAY 100”, “$10K”, “-37%”
  • A reaction: “WAIT…”, “NO WAY”, “I WAS WRONG”
  • A question: “WORTH IT?”, “WHY?”
  • A label that sets the stakes: “BANNED”, “FINAL BOSS”, “ROOM 13”

Make it readable at phone size

Test the thumbnail at about 168 pixels wide — the size of YouTube's up-next list. If you cannot read the words there, they are too small or too many.

  • Heavy, condensed fonts (bold sans-serif) read best
  • High contrast: white or yellow on dark, or dark on bright, often with an outline or shadow
  • One or two colours for text, never a rainbow
  • Large enough to fill roughly a third of the frame width

Where to put it

Keep text out of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length, and away from the very bottom edge, where returning viewers see a red progress bar. Top-left or the left two-thirds of the frame are the safest places, and placing the text opposite the face keeps both readable.

When to use no text at all

Skip the text when the image alone tells the story — a spectacular place, a dramatic before/after, a strong reaction to an obvious object. If adding words does not make the promise clearer, leave them out.

How ThumbMagic handles text

Put the words you want in quotes in your prompt, or fill in the Thumbnail text field, and ThumbMagic designs the lettering as part of the image. Every text layer can be edited afterwards — change words, size, colour and position without regenerating the picture.
