YouTube Thumbnail Size, Format and Safe Zones (2026 Guide)

6 min read

The short answer

YouTube recommends custom thumbnails at 1280×720 pixels with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The image must stay under 2 MB, and the minimum width is 640 pixels. Accepted formats are JPG, PNG and GIF (non-animated); BMP also works, but there is rarely a reason to use it.

Because YouTube shows the same image in the feed, in search, on TVs and as the preview in embedded players, a sharp 16:9 image at full size is the safest choice everywhere.

  • Size: 1280×720 pixels (minimum width 640 pixels)
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • File size: under 2 MB
  • Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated) or BMP

Why the 16:9 ratio matters

The YouTube player and almost every feed layout are 16:9. If you upload a square or portrait image, YouTube adds black bars or crops it, and your lettering may end up cut off or tiny. Designing directly in a 16:9 frame means what you see is what viewers get.

ThumbMagic generates every YouTube thumbnail natively in 16:9, so there is no cropping step and no surprises after upload.

Safe zones: where not to put text

YouTube overlays a few elements on top of thumbnails. The most important one is the video length badge in the bottom-right corner. Returning viewers may also see a red progress bar along the bottom edge, and on some surfaces hover controls appear in the top-right corner.

Keep your key words and your subject's face out of the bottom-right corner and away from the bottom edge. A good rule of thumb is to keep essential text inside the left two-thirds of the frame or the upper half.

  • Bottom-right corner: video length badge
  • Bottom edge: watch-progress bar for returning viewers
  • Top-right corner: hover icons on some devices

How to stay under 2 MB without losing quality

A 1280×720 JPG saved at around 85–90% quality is usually well under the limit and looks sharp. PNG is lossless, which makes it great for crisp lettering but can push photographic thumbnails over 2 MB. If a PNG is too large, export the same image as a high-quality JPG.

ThumbMagic's YouTube export automatically sizes the image to 1280×720 and compresses it below 2 MB, so the upload is never rejected.

Can I upload a 1080p or 4K thumbnail?

Yes, as long as the image is 16:9 and stays under 2 MB. Larger images such as 1920×1080 can look slightly crisper on big screens, but the 2 MB limit makes very high resolutions hard to reach with photographic detail. For most channels 1280×720 is the sweet spot; keep a 4K version for other uses such as channel art, posts or press.

Do I need a verified account?

To upload custom thumbnails, your YouTube account needs access to intermediate features, which you unlock by verifying your account with a phone number in YouTube Studio. Until then YouTube only lets you pick one of the automatically generated frames.

What about Shorts?

Shorts are vertical, so if you design a cover for a Short, use 1080×1920 pixels (9:16) and keep text in the middle of the frame, away from the captions and buttons that YouTube overlays at the bottom and on the right side.

Test your thumbnail

YouTube Studio includes a Test & compare feature that lets you upload up to three thumbnails for one video and shows which one earns the most watch time. Generating a few strong variants before you publish makes these tests easy, and the results teach you what your audience responds to.

Checklist before you upload

Run through this list for every video:

  • 16:9 at 1280×720 pixels or larger
  • Under 2 MB, saved as JPG or PNG
  • Three to five words of text at most, readable at phone size
  • Nothing important in the bottom-right corner
  • One clear focal point and strong contrast
  • It adds to the title instead of repeating it
